It’s been such a long time since we’ve had golfers on the course. While we are very much into the New England mud season, we’re excited to have the back 9 open for play. It’s no frills golf in March, with fuzzy greens and soft conditions, but we truly hope you enjoy the walk around our beloved Putterham tomorrow. Our fall agronomic plan is wrapping up this week w Our fall agronomic plan is wrapping up this week with major fairway work being done by our friends @sportsturfspecialtiesinc. We are having our fairways verticut and sanded. This is absolutely a critical part of our plan to improve this playing surface. Sand will not only smooth out the playing surface, but over time with repeated annual applications the sand will improve firmness and drainage of the fairways. This is our 4th application in the last 3 years. The verticutting is removing an incredible amount of organic matter and grass from the fairways. As a result the grass stands up more, the sand can get under the leaf canopy, and the fairways will feel less squishy. This week we are continuing with our agronomic imp This week we are continuing with our agronomic improvement program focused on our approaches. First, a heavy top dressing is applied. Then, on some of our approaches with rocks near the surface, we are using our @ventrac_tractors with the aeravator attachment which does an incredible job below the surface. After aerating, we follow with verticutting applying vertical cutting to the turf. Once all the thatchy material is cleaned up, the entire approach is seeded, and brushed. In a short few days, the approaches are healed up and returning to normal playing conditions. This agronomic practice relieves pressures from compaction, playing, improves the existing turf, increases firmness and smoothness, and increases the turf density with the overseeding. We are working hard to improve the turf quality on all of our playing surfaces. This week we welcomed friends @sportsturfspecialti This week we welcomed friends @sportsturfspecialtiesinc to the golf course to continue our fall agronomic plan. This week we focused on slice seeding fairways on holes 7, 8, and 9. This agronomic practice has never been done before here and we feel that this will allow our fairways to continue to improve. These holes struggled severely with the historic rain of 2023. With night time temperature retreating and the hope of manageable precipitation in the forecast, we pressed the go button and made this investment. Up next, continues aeration on approaches next week. In October, our fairway improvement plan continues with verticutting and top dressing. Stay tuned… #brookline #putterham #getbettereveryday
The Brookline Golf Course is hosting the 3rd Annua The Brookline Golf Course is hosting the 3rd Annual MIT Sloan School of Management’s “Writing the Code” event today at Brookline Golf Course. Writing the Code has expanded this year to welcome 120 students, 36 alumni, 12 @newenglandpga professionals, and MIT staff. Bringing together various communities together to network, introduce the game of golf, and have conversations about diversity, equity, and inclusion. All 180 attendees enjoyed a delicious barbeque by @hemlockbrookline. As the sun sets on another fantastic day at the go As the sun sets on another fantastic day at the golf course, I want to take a moment and thank the incredible effort and dedication from our Golf Course Superintendent Mike Murphy. Today isn’t any different than any other day at the course, but tonight we won’t be taking his dedication and efforts for granted either. Mike is the first one to get to the course most days, and many days he’s one of the last staff members to leave. There isn’t a person that works harder than Mike, and when something goes awry, Mike is always there helping or leading a solution to the problem. Mike juggles so many aspects of the job everyday and always maintains a sense of calm that ripples throughout his entire grounds team. Murph as we all call him, wants nothing more than to see this golf course become what he knows it’s fully capable of and balances improvements with playability perfectly everyday. He is so excited for the Landscape Master Plan to become a reality, as he’s keenly aware, it’s everything that the course needs to see its potential realized. Murph inspires all the staff around him to be the best they can every day, and to me that’s what makes him so special and a great leader.
