Happy Golf Season!

Happy Golf Season, Friends,

It has been an exciting start to our 2023 golf season!  Above normal temperatures have given us a beautiful start to the season, with the grasses and trees being 3 weeks ahead of schedule this year.  Conditions are coming in nicely with Mike Murphy, GCSAA Golf Course Superintendent, leading the efforts.  Mike and his team are working feverishly on cleaning up the course, training new staff, and grooming the golf course with mowing expansions and contractions.  We have also recently finished a round of selective tree removals and are cleaning up those areas.  Additionally, you will begin to see some new areas of less maintenance with more focus on native grasses.  We hope you enjoy the golf course as much as we do!

Why are we cart path only?  I know many of you are curious, so I would love to explain.  There is approximately 2,000 pounds of grass seed that was used in restoration efforts from hosting the US Open.  As most recall, we endured a significant drought last summer and a wet winter, so we are expecting to see the grass seed begin to grow over the next few weeks.  A flourishing turf can withstand cart traffic, and we will soon have an opportunity to enjoy that.

Hemlock Grill is enjoying a great start to their golf season. Have you enjoyed lunch or early dinner yet?  I would encourage you to come enjoy a great meal with an awesome view.  We also have partnered with Hemlock Grill and invested in new furniture throughout all three dining areas!  I highly recommend the classic fish n chips with a great Trillium IPA.  Next month we’ll begin to reopen our satellite stations at The Turn and The Range.

You may have noticed a new yellow tee marker on the golf course.  Those will be our “Yellow” tee, a course geared to the new golfer with a slower swing speed.  These have been designed to give new golfers an enjoyable experience with a chance to reach the green in regulation.  On holes where you see the tees in the fairway or such, it’s because the tee box hasn’t been built yet.  Another new tee marker will debut with the new scorecard.  This new marker, the “Farm Tee,” will provide players with a golf course that is designed to challenge new golfers and experienced players alike.  The Farm Tee is an ode to the property’s history as a tree farm. Our friends from MassGolf just recently finished rating our golf course from all of these new tees.  This hasn’t been done since 2008, and the golf course has certainly changed since then.  Once we get the new ratings, a new scorecard will be produced, giving all players the opportunity to post a score from any tee of their choice.  Stay tuned!

This time of the year begins our golf leagues.  This year, there are league opportunities for seniors, male golfers, female golfers, and juniors! On our website and below you will find more information about leagues:

Seniors Co-ed | Putterham Oaks Golf League | Thursday
Female Golfers | Brookline Womens Golf Association | Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday, Sunday
Male Golfers | Thursday Men’s League | Thursday
Junior Golfers | Tuesday

In closing, I want to thank you for your support.  I’m so lucky to be the voice of an amazing team at the Brookline Golf Course.  Our staff takes great pride in helping you enjoy your visit.  They work hard, whether preparing the golf course, assisting your golf experience, or supplying you with a delicious meal and/or beverage.  We’d love to get to know you, so please say hello.

See you next time!

Best regards,

Justin Lawson, PGA
