Summer is around the Corner!

Dear Friends,

The flowers are blooming for sure, as we are half way through the month of May.  Can you believe how fast time is going by?  I wanted to write to you before we assist with hosting the U.S. Open in June.  I have discussed many of the details of what will be happening here in my previous letters.  And I will once again summarize those for all of our new Email Club members, but today, I want to focus on life after the U.S. Open.

Before we get to July, June will be an incredible month of activity here at the Brookline Golf Course.  First, we will begin with greens aeration on May 31st and June 1st.  This is a very important agronomic activity that will help ensure quality putting surfaces for months to come.  June 1st we will also begin to consolidate our offerings to our guests.  We will only feature 9 holes of golf, with only 9 hole reservations being allowed.  The Driving Range will continue to remain open for a few days.  The range will eventually shut down to all golfers.  The Clubhouse will close as well on June 1st as we look to convert the building into the public safety headquarters for the championship.  The golf operation will be exclusively outside as we will be very busy moving out of the building.  Our friends at Hemlock Grill will be open for take-out only, and will be limited.  June 9th the entire property closes down to the public.  Immediately after the conclusion of the championship, there will be an incredible flurry of activity here to make the property accessible to all of our guests as soon as possible.  Tentatively, we are hopeful to return to limited operations beginning June 25th.  Weather will likely play the biggest factor in that timeline.    Restoration efforts will be underway by then, and we’ll have several renovations also likely underway at that time.  I’m asking for everyone’s patience in advance while we work diligently to ensure this opportunity is a positive one for our golf course.  I’m extremely confident that all the planning, sequencing, and forthcoming execution will be successful for all.

July, July, July.  It will be here before we know it.  While we will be working with every ounce of muscle and grit to get our golf course fully back open, we aren’t confident in when that exactly will happen.  When it does, plan on enjoying many newly renovated tees, several new forward tees, and some fun improvements around the clubhouse.  We also will begin our community engagement plan focusing on events.  We will be hosting several Movie Nights on the Range this summer, and in the fall we will be hosting The Sunset and Fall Fest.  The Sunset will be a brand new event for us, which will be a full production concert on our range.  Fall Fest will return again, featuring the legendary Hay Ride as well as many fun fall favorite activities.  Dates for both The Sunset and Fall Fest are still TBD and I will be sharing details in the coming months.

I would also strongly encourage everyone to tune in on May 17th at 5:30pm to the Golf Course Landscape Master Plan Design Review Committee Meeting.  Our design team, led by architect Mark Mungeam, will be unveiling the preliminary master plan.  We are now entering the feedback phase of this exciting process, and I am encouraging all those interested in the future of our beloved golf course to tune in, get involved, and be prepared for some major renovations to be planned in the near future.

DO YOU NEED TICKETS TO THE U.S. OPEN?  Or do you know someone who does?  I’m happy to share that there are a select few tickets that are available in auction format, with proceeds supporting several local groups.  Our friends at the Greenspace Alliance and the Friends of Putterham Woods both have auctions of multiple tickets that are all open for bid now.  Greenspace Alliance is a consortium of organizations passionate about preserving greenspace throughout Brookline. The Friends of Putterham Woods is a group of residents dedicated to preserving the forested areas adjacent to the golf course and parking lot. Both organizations are aligned with our values at the golf course and these proceeds will allow them to continue with their advocacy efforts in town.  We greatly appreciate what they do, and are excited for both to receive funding support through the sales of these tickets.

In closing, I want to take this opportunity to thank all of you for your support of our golf course.  I’m lucky to have called this my home for the past two years.  I have learned so much during this time, have met many amazing people who enjoy the game we love, and have planned many exciting things for our future here.  I’m lucky to be surrounded by an amazing team where we have established a culture that is focused on you, the property, and our community.   I want to thank my team and the Park and Recreation Commission for their unwavering support of our vision at the golf course.  As my friend, Mark Mungeam said, “Forward is our future”, and I’m honored to take each step towards that vision for all of you.

Wishing you and your family a wonderful start to the Summer!
