Cross-Country Skiing Comes to Brookline!
After three snow-less years, Mother Nature blessed us this year with a fabulous base of snow for our Nordic sports program.  Three years ago, the golf course invested in a groomer and ski equipment, and we have finally been able to put it into use!

Starting with the first storm in December, we were able to fully realize our objective of becoming a year-round recreational facility, with sufficient snow to launch our cross-country ski program. Trails are open to the community at no charge, and ski equipment packages are available for rent in the pro shop. This new program has been enthusiastically received by both novice and experienced skiers from Brookline and the surrounding communities, with over 800 people to date enjoying skiing through the property on two km of beautifully groomed trails.  Next year, once the construction on the golf course is complete, we will expand our snow sports program to offer over seven km of groomed trails.

In addition to skiing, snow-shoeing is also available, both on the course as well as through marked trails in our new Putterham Woods area.  Snowshoes are available for rent in the pro shop. The pro shop is open daily from 9 to 4, with last ski and snowshoe rentals going out at 3. If you haven’t yet enjoyed a sunny winter day on the course, we invite you to come on down!

Construction Update

The Golf Course Construction project has been steadily moving forward through these tough winter conditions.  Believe it or not, we don’t think this project could have been done in any other weather.  The frozen ground has been a blessing, and something that hasn’t been part of our previous winters.

The crew has wrapped up much of the excavation on holes, 3,4, and 6 now.  Recently they have been working on hole 8, removing the old culvert that was on the right side of the hole.  The team still has to remove a large section of the culvert that crosses the approach on 8.  They are saving that for last, once the main channel is done.  The changes on 8 will be major in nature, and breathtaking, but most importantly we believe significantly functional.  The team recently relocated the cart path from the right side of the hole to the left side!

Now the team has turned their attention to ground zero, the Main Channel.  The Main Channel is located behind the driving range and runs from 3 green all the way to the forward tee on hole 7.  This body of water is the primary focus of the project.  The area by 3 green will become significantly wider and have the ability to store and process significantly more water.

Employee Spotlight – Duncan Smith

Heading up Brookline Golf Course’s instructional program is PGA professional Duncan Smith. Duncan has 25 years of experience playing golf and 15 years of experience teaching the game. Originally from Manchester, England, Duncan moved to South Florida to attend college on a golf scholarship. He is also the Director of Instruction at Woodlands Country Club in Fort Lauderdale.

Duncan still teaches in Florida over the winter (can you blame him?) but will be returning to Brookline in early April, and will be available for lessons for the balance of the golf season. Experienced and novice golfers alike note that Duncan is easily approachable and encouraging in his teaching style.  Regardless of your age or ability, he can help you elevate your game.  For videos, tips, and a free online lesson, follow Duncan on Instagram here.
